How we built this estimate

Every dollar figure below links back to articles/data/pricing-data.json, a public-source compilation from 2026-05-20. The methodology:

  • Numbers with a source link = a public fee schedule, vendor price list, or government page published the figure.
  • Ranges with low/typical/high = multiple LA-area vets or carriers publish different prices for the same line.
  • “Not publicly published — get a quote” = no public source exists; the line is real but requires a phone call.

This is the honest version. The $29 readiness analysis fills in the carrier-specific quote layer for your particular dates and route.

The universal LA-side line items

These apply to any international move from the US, not just UK. Sources are LA-area mobile vets, low-cost clinics, Petmate’s official price list, and APHIS.

Line itemRange (USD)Source
ISO microchip implantation$20–$75 (typical $35)LA-area vet pricing — some published prices don’t explicitly state ISO 11784/11785 compliance; confirm with the vet
Rabies vaccine (1-year or 3-year)$15–$55 (typical $25)CAMP LA mobile clinic + Saving Grace
USDA-accredited vet exam / consultation$75–$249 (typical $100)Saving Grace LA + Lawndale Pet Hospital; mobile vets add a $99–$249 travel fee by zone
International health certificate paperworkfrom $400Saving Grace LA publishes “international health certificate from $400”
APHIS USDA endorsement fee (0 lab tests, any number of pets)$101 flatAPHIS fee schedule — UK doesn’t require titer for US-origin pets, so this is the 0-test tier
IATA cargo crate (Petmate Sky Kennel 36″ for a medium dog)$220Petmate official price — varies by crate size: 21″ $80, 28″ $140, 32″ $190, 36″ $220, 40″ $270, 48″ $420

LA-side subtotal for a typical medium dog: roughly $680–$1,300 in published fees, depending on which vet + crate size you pick.

The UK-side line items (HARC and customs)

A stylised infographic-style table showing the major US-to-UK pet move line items with their dollar ranges: LA vet, USDA endorsement, crate, LAX cargo terminal, Virgin Atlantic LAX-LHR, HARC fees, totaling roughly $2,500-5,000 baseline.

Once your pet lands at LHR / LGW / EDI, Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC) processes the arrival. Published fees from HARC’s tariff:

Line itemUSDSource
HARC collect from aircraft$133HARC tariff
HARC boarding / handling — first pet with pre-check$272Same
HARC additional pet (same consignment)$70Same
HARC standalone pre-check feenot publicly publishedAPHIS-hosted HARC instructions describe pre-check workflow + consequences if missed, but no standalone fee published as of 2026-05-20
UK customs / import VAT (qualifying non-commercial personal move)$0gov.uk Transfer of Residence relief; usually zero for non-commercial moves with documented owner residency change

UK-side total for one dog through HARC: roughly $405 in published fees.

The cargo flight — biggest line, least public

This is where the honest framing matters most. Cargo carrier rates for live animals aren’t published as static fares — they’re quoted live based on crate dimensions, gross weight, routing, date, temperature restrictions, and booking channel.

Of the four main LAX→LHR cargo channels:

CarrierPublic rate?What we have
Virgin Atlantic Cargotariff-derived~$319–$419+ for a 40-lb dog in a 36-inch crate (LAX-LHR), excluding UK agent / HARC / customs layers. Virgin Cargo tariff
United Cargonot publicCall United Cargo directly — they have a partner-cargo arrangement on LAX→LHR direct
Lufthansa Cargonot publicRoutes via Frankfurt to LHR; published rates aren't on a public page
British Airways IAG Cargonot publicLAX→LHR direct; call IAG Cargo

Plus the LAX-side terminal receiving fee for live animals:

CarrierLAX live-animal terminal feeSource
Virgin Atlantic Cargo$103–$203Virgin Atlantic Cargo LAX
Others (United / Lufthansa / IAG)not publicly publishedConfirm with each carrier's cargo line

Honest take: budget $1,500–$3,000 for the cargo + terminal layer for a medium dog on a major carrier from LAX to LHR. Larger dogs, oversize crates, and peak-season bookings push higher. This is the line that benefits most from a real phone quote.

Total scenarios

For one medium dog (40 lb, 36-inch IATA Sky Kennel), DIY (no relocation agency):

ScenarioRange (USD)Notes
Budget DIY (lowest published prices on every line + Virgin Cargo lower end)~$2,000Cheap vet, $15 rabies, mid-range crate, no agency
Typical DIY (mid-range vet + Virgin Cargo typical)~$3,500Most LA-based readers fall here
Premium DIY (high-end mobile vet + cargo with peak surcharges)~$5,000+Snub-nose breeds, peak season, larger dog
Agency-managed (relocation specialist handles end-to-end)+$1,500–$3,500 on topIndustry-published service fee range; verify with the specific agency

For larger dogs (>70 lb, 48-inch crate), cargo rates jump significantly — budget toward the high end or above.

What we don’t know yet — and what to do

Three categories of cost we couldn’t pin down from public sources:

  1. Other-carrier LAX→LHR cargo rates.Lufthansa Cargo, United Cargo, IAG Cargo — call their cargo lines (not passenger reservations) with your specific dates + crate dimensions. Virgin Cargo’s tariff-derived figure ($319–$419) is the only public reference point we have for the route.
  2. HARC standalone pre-check fee. Email HARC before flight to confirm whether pre-check itself has a charge or whether it’s only reflected in the boarding/handling schedule.
  3. LA-UK cargo / customs pet agent fee (if you use a third-party agent). Industry ranges from $1,500–$3,500 per public references, but get a quote for your specific scenario.

If your trip is in the next 3 months and the budget matters: the $29 readiness analysis includes a recent phone-verification round on the carriers most commonly used on the LAX→LHR route for your specific dates.

The fee-update caveat

APHIS fees, HARC fees, and BICON-equivalent fees update periodically. The numbers above are accurate as of our 2026-05-20 compilation — but each authority can publish a new schedule with little warning. Before committing to a flight booking, verify each line against the source URL on the day.
